Bat Community Interactions

Welcome to the Bat Community Interactions page!
This page is dedicated to fostering open communication and collaboration between the Bat Archaeological Project and the community of Bat. Here, we share updates on our ongoing research, announce upcoming events, and post opportunities for local participation in archaeological, educational, and cultural heritage activities.

We believe archaeology is most meaningful when it is connected to the people who live with and alongside the past. This space is designed not only for sharing information, but also for listening. Community members are invited to contact us with questions, suggestions, concerns, or feedback—your voice is an essential part of the project. All correspondence is treated as confidential.

Images, quotations, and social media content shared here appear with the permission of the individuals involved. We are grateful for the continued support and engagement of the Bat community, and we look forward to building knowledge together—past, present, and future.

Social Media
The Bat Archaeological Project is committed to sharing its discoveries as widely as possible—both within the local community and beyond. In addition to working with regional news outlets, we regularly post updates, photos, and behind-the-scenes looks at our research through social media.
Below you’ll find links to some of our most recent posts and announcements, offering a glimpse into the ongoing work at Bat and the people involved.

Initiatives
The Bat Archaeological Project is developing a range of initiatives to make our work more accessible, engaging, and beneficial to the Bat community. These programs are designed to create opportunities for conversation, learning, and collaboration—ensuring that the archaeology of Bat is not only studied in the community, but also with the community.

Welcome Coffee
At the start of each field season, we invite interested community members to join us for coffee, meet the team, and learn about our goals and planned activities for the season.
School Group Visits
BAP archaeologists lead guided visits for local school groups, introducing students to the archaeology of Bat through on-site exploration, discussion, and hands-on learning.

Annual Community Day
At the end of each field season, we host a community celebration featuring food, music, activities, and presentations. We share our latest discoveries, invite input on interpretation, and celebrate Bat’s rich heritage together.
Excavation Open Days
On select days during the field season, visitors are welcome to stop by our active excavations to see the work firsthand, ask questions, and learn more about how archaeology is practiced.

Husn al-Wardi Modeling
Since 2023, BAP has been working to create a detailed 3D digital record of Ḥusn al-Wardī, the medieval mudbrick fort at the heart of Bat village. As an important historic landmark and a symbol of community identity, the fort is also endangered by weathering and modern activity. Our annual digital modeling initiative allows us to document its current condition, monitor changes over time, and support future preservation efforts in collaboration with local stakeholders.

Pottery Education Events
These sessions bring together past and present: we share our enthusiasm for modern pottery-making while also talking about the ancient ceramics that make up the majority of finds at Bat.

Share Your Thoughts!
The Bat Archaeological Project values the knowledge, perspectives, and experiences of the Bat community. We want to hear from you—how can our work better serve the people who live alongside this history every day? Whether you have ideas for future events, concerns about our activities, or new information about the archaeological remains in and around Bat, your input is welcome and important.

We are also especially interested in community interpretations of the past—stories, memories, and insights that help connect archaeology to living heritage.
All comments, suggestions, and concerns are completely confidential. You may include contact information if you’d like us to respond, but it is entirely optional. Your voice matters—thank you for sharing it.
